I’ve been thinking about starting this site/forum for well over a year now, not coincidentally my son is now 5, and is running me ragged. I entered fatherhood relatively late, at age 42, and although I’ve been a pretty active guy most of my life I’ve struggled with my weight and fitness level on-and-off since being hit hard by the Freshman 15 (or 20) in college; joining the Lacrosse club sophomore year trimmed that and made me aware of what fit can really look like on my post high school physique! School was followed by years of soccer clubs, snowboarding season-passes and a mountain-biking obsessed girlfriends that kept the scale from hitting obesity, but just by a little. As of this update I’m 6’1″ 200.5 Lbs (BMI 26.45) respectably below my least-fit 222.5 June 26th 2010 that equals a BMI of 29.4 one tenth of a point from the dreaded BIG-O (not the good kind either. Obesity!). So, as far as fitness goes, I’m much worse off than some and better than others which I’m sure applies in some way to every dad reading this. My intention is for this site to be about fit parenting AND how that applies to mind and body.
I encourage everybody who stops by to contribute what you can and take away what is of help. Bruce Lee said it more gracefully in this quote: “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.” This is a learning process for me and I hope a journey that gives me a long, long time with my family and allows me to be active with my son long into the foreseeable future. The reason that I’m starting this today (Father’s Day 2017) is that I’m looking at the pitfalls of bad health choices in a new light and feel I owe it to my son to be here as long as possible with the highest quality of life for him, for myself and for others who participate here and are joining me on this journey. Not to mention I was a sub on a buddy’s softball team last night and my level of soreness today far outstrips the level of contribution I made to the team. (updated weight and BMI 1/22/18)
Let’s get YOUR Fit Dad Project (TheFitDadProject.com) started.
Oh, one last thing! I called it a “project” because it is, I think, we are going to experience a series of hurdles, milestones, plateaus and the occasional setback that require new skills and ways of thinking to address. Like buying and maintaining an older home it is going to be an ongoing PROJECT for sure!
Take a look around and let’s get started!
